Frankfurt Airport Suspends New Sky Line System
Frankfurt Airport has temporarily suspended operations of its new Sky Line people mover system following technical issues identified during the first weeks of service.
The fully automated train, which connects Terminals 1, 2 and 3, is expected to remain out of operation for several weeks while technicians carry out inspections and system adjustments.
According to airport operator Fraport, the suspension comes after the system handled up to 25,000 passengers daily during its initial high-volume operations. Engineers from Siemens Mobility and Fraport are currently working on technical optimizations across the vehicles and infrastructure.
Fraport said reliability and operational stability remain the top priorities as work continues to identify and resolve the causes of recent disruptions.
To reduce the impact on passengers, the airport has introduced a replacement shuttle bus service operating between terminals every two to three minutes during the day. Overnight, buses will run every 10 minutes between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Up to 20 buses are being deployed landside, while transfer passengers can use a separate airside shuttle service operating with up to five buses.
Passengers are being advised to allow extra travel time when arriving at or transferring through the airport. Staff members are also available across terminals to assist travelers.
The new Sky Line system covers approximately 5.6 kilometers and is designed to transport up to 4,000 passengers per hour in each direction during normal operations.
Frankfurt Airport confirmed that the existing Sky Line service between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 continues to operate normally.
