Germany Scraps Transit Visa Requirement for Indian Travelers

News

Germany has eliminated airport transit visa requirements for Indian nationals traveling to third countries via German airports, effective June 3, 2026, in a policy change welcomed by the Lufthansa Group as a significant step toward smoother connectivity between India and the rest of the world.

The change, announced by the German Embassy in New Delhi, means Indian passengers can now transit through Frankfurt and Munich without requiring a separate airport transit visa, removing a longstanding administrative hurdle for one of the fastest-growing international travel markets.

The Lufthansa Group, which describes India as its largest intercontinental market in the Asia-Pacific region, currently operates more than 70 weekly flights between India and Europe and has been active in the Indian market for over six decades. The group is marking its 100th anniversary year with a series of India-focused investments, including the deployment of Lufthansa's Allegris cabin on additional Boeing 787-9 services from Delhi and Hyderabad, the launch of SWISS's inaugural direct service between Bengaluru and Zurich in the winter 2026 schedule, and the rollout of the Future Onboard Experience (FOX) premium service concept across all long-haul cabins.

To meet growing demand, the group is also adding capacity with extra SWISS Airbus A330 frequencies between Delhi and Zurich and enhanced Lufthansa A380 services between Mumbai and Munich.

"The introduction of visa-free airport transit for Indian nationals travelling via Germany to onward destinations will simplify travel, improve connectivity and further reinforce Germany's role as a leading gateway between India, Europe and the world," the group said in a statement.
