International travellers to Bali will not be affected by unpopular sex legislation

News

Recently, legislators in Indonesia introduced several disputed rules to the country's colonial-era penal code, raising worries about privacy and human rights throughout the world.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Bali experienced severe economic instability, like with most other popular tourist destinations. While industry operators earlier warned that the country's new criminal law may deter foreign visitors and damage the country's worldwide image, tourists have begun returning to the popular resort island as the outbreak winded down.

As the governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, put it, there will be "no checks on marital statuses at tourist accommodations like hotels, villas, guest houses or spas, or inspections by public officials or community groups", following the passing of the new contentious sex legislation.

Wayan also responded to inquiries from the public about how the new code's provisions relating to sex and marriage will impact people from other countries. The island of Bali will remain unchanged, and tourists can feel at ease and secure while visiting, he stated. Wayan further reassured the public that their right to privacy was protected by law and that they had nothing to fear.

In addition, officials are looking forward to welcome guests with the consecrated Balinese hospitality and urged all parties not to provide incorrect claims on the Indonesian criminal law that can can lead to disruptions of the tourism on the island.

The governor’s remarks echoed an official explanation made last week by government spokesman Albert Aries, who stressed that international investors and visitors did not have to be concerned about persecution under the new rules.

Moreover, the new Criminal Code has never mandated that businesses in the tourist industry inquire as to the marital status of their customers.
