JetBlue to Discontinue Flights to Boston

Airlines & Airports

Passengers with bookings on the Baltimore-Boston route post-May 1 will be fully refunded to their initial payment method.

JetBlue is set to cease its operations in Baltimore this spring, ending over a decade of service.

A JetBlue spokesperson told T+L, “It's always challenging to leave a market. We're grateful for the time we served in Baltimore. However, due to the route's underperformance and limited customer demand, we will be ending our BOS-BWI service, leading to the closure of our Baltimore BlueCity operations.”

The airline launched its Baltimore service in 2009, offering as many as four daily flights during its most active period.

On May 1, 2024, JetBlue will terminate its sole route from Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) to its primary hub in Boston. This route is currently flown up to twice daily.

JetBlue has observed a decline in demand on this route over time, prompting a reduction in flight frequencies. Competing airlines, Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines, offer up to 3 and 9 daily flights respectively on the same route.

JetBlue confirmed to T+L that passengers booked on the Baltimore-Boston route after May 1 will be fully refunded to their original payment method. This announcement precedes JetBlue's upcoming earnings call at the end of January, where they will discuss the fourth quarter financial results of 2023.

In other news, JetBlue also mentioned that the decision to exit Baltimore was made well before the court's ruling on their proposed acquisition of Spirit Airlines. Recently, a federal judge blocked the Spirit merger. JetBlue intends to appeal this decision.

Despite leaving Baltimore, JetBlue will maintain its presence in the greater Washington, D.C. area, offering over 10 daily flights between Boston and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). While exiting Baltimore, the airline is also adding Tulum, Mexico, to its list of destinations in June, focusing on a leisure-based route.
