KLM Catering Services Launches World’s First 100% Electric Catering Trucks

News

In a world first, KLM Catering Services (KCS) has launched two fully electric and refrigerated catering trucks, marking a significant milestone in sustainable aviation operations. These trucks are a key part of KLM’s broader objective of achieving emission-free ground handling by 2030.

Michiel van der Eijk, CEO of KLM Catering Services, expressed pride in the company's pioneering efforts: "At KLM Catering Services, we are committed to testing the latest technologies, and being the first airline caterer in the world to operate 100% electric catering trucks is an exciting achievement. We are thrilled to test these electric trucks in the coming period."

Quieter and More Sustainable Operations

The new electric trucks not only run entirely on electricity but also feature an electric engine that powers the cooling system, making them quieter than traditional catering trucks. This reduction in noise is beneficial for both KCS drivers and other employees working on the platform, enhancing the working environment at the airport.

Testing and Optimization

KCS has partnered with two leading suppliers, DOLL® and Mallaghan, to develop the electric catering trucks, with Volvo providing the chassis. These two trucks will undergo intensive testing in the coming months. During this period, KCS will evaluate the trucks’ performance, their impact on catering operations, and their overall user-friendliness. The insights gained from this testing phase will be used to optimize the vehicles and ensure their smooth integration into KCS's daily operations.

Contributing to a Greener Future

With the introduction of these electric trucks, KLM Catering Services is making significant strides in its sustainability efforts, reducing its carbon footprint, and contributing to the airline's goal of greener operations across the airport. The move underscores KCS's commitment to advancing sustainable practices and leading the way in emission-free ground handling solutions.
