Maldives former president will not travel to UK for medical care
Announcements

After the Maldivian government asked him to guarantee his return with family member, Mohamed Nasheed decided not to travel to UK for his surgery
Current President Abdula Yameen has finally released approval for Nasheed's spinal cord surgery in UK journey, following repeated pressure from India and Sri Lanka.
After he previously rejected the request two months ago, this time Yameen and the Maldivian government agreed but asked for a family member as “guarantor” for the former president's return. If he does not return in 30 days, his relative could be hold criminally liable.
"The issue here is with an agreement Nasheed's family member has to sign. The document says Nasheed's family member agrees to stay in Malé, and to seek permission from Maldives Correctional Services to leave Malé, and also agrees to having criminal charges filed against them if any provision in the document is violated," Nasheed's lawyer declared at a press conference yesterday.
However, Nasheed did not agree on these conditions and refused the government's proposal.
Maldive's Foreign Affairs Ministry also stated:
"The Government of Maldives is disappointed by the refusal of former President Nasheed to travel to UK for surgery, as requested by himself."
Currently serving a 13 years sentence in jail for terrorist acts, ex-president Nasheed was removed from his political position in 2012.
