AI Agencies, New-Gen Travelers, and Space Tourism Set to Transform the Next Decade

Jenny Southan, the CEO of Globetrender, unveiled six tourism megatrends poised to evolve in the near future.

The first trend pertains to "gamma gateways," signifying the emergence of airports in more remote, underrated, or underserved destinations. The second trend focuses on AI-driven travel agencies, with Southan noting their ability to cater exceptionally well to mainstream travelers, even though luxury tourists will continue to seek personalized service.

The third trend, "clean air tourism," centers on travelers seeking destinations with superior air quality. With air pollution affecting 98% of Europeans and causing 400,000 annual deaths in Europe, this motivation is gaining traction.

The fourth trend, according to Southan, highlights the influence of the "alpha generation." Born between 2011 and 2025, these youngsters are already becoming travel decision-makers and are projected to play an even more significant role in the future, considering there will be an estimated two billion Alpha generation children globally by 2025.

Southan also emphasized the importance of adapting to evolving family structures, such as single-parent or same-parent families, which will shape the hospitality sector's offerings and services. As the fifth trend, she introduced "self-sufficient hotels" that not only produce on-site gastronomic products but also offer sustainable options like emission-neutral infrastructure.

Finally, Southan underscored the burgeoning space tourism sector, predicting that by 2030, this market could be valued at $8.67 billion with a growth rate of 37%, partially driven by an increase in billionaires worldwide.

The global travel industry grapples with the challenge of catering to increasingly autonomous and informed travelers. To capture the attention of these individuals, technology plays a pivotal role. Emily Weiss, Senior Managing Director of Global Industry Lead Travel at Accenture, noted that 45% of U.S. consumers use platforms like TikTok and other social media apps to choose their next travel destination. She highlighted the role of generative AI in customer service.

Rodolfo Moreira, Head of Customer Experience at Vueling Airlines, emphasized the role of new technologies, automation, and AI in enhancing customer service. Sustainability is a key trend, and María Zarraluqui, VP Global Development at Meliá Hotels International Group, highlighted the first carbon-neutral hotel in Menorca, emphasizing sustainable design and local sourcing.

Florence Kaci, from Phocuswright, discussed emerging travel technology trends, emphasizing real-time data management and analytics, the significance of Web3, and the transformative power of generative artificial intelligence. She also pondered the adoption and challenges of electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles in urban transport.
