Starting June 2024, China Eastern Airlines will offer thrice-weekly flights between Vienna and Shanghai, enhancing Austria-China connectivity.
Travel options between Austria and China are set to increase as China Eastern Airlines, a leading airline in the People’s Republic of China, announces flights to Vienna. Beginning 22 June 2024, the airline will link Vienna with Shanghai, operating three weekly flights year-round on an Airbus A330-200. This new route underscores China's significance to Vienna Airport and acts as a catalyst for business and tourism in Austria.
Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport, expressed enthusiasm for the new partnership, highlighting the enhanced travel opportunities between Vienna and Shanghai, as well as connections to global destinations in China Eastern’s network. The route not only boosts Vienna Airport's hub status but also marks a positive sign for economic and tourism relations between Austria and China.
Norbert Kettner, CEO of the Vienna Tourist Board, pointed out China’s role as Vienna’s second-largest distant market pre-pandemic, with annual overnight stays numbering half a million. The flights, targeting the high-value luxury segment, are expected to significantly aid in attracting Chinese tourists.
Shanghai, an industrial and commercial giant, is one of the world's largest cities with a vibrant cultural and educational scene. From its bustling port to landmarks like the Bund promenade and the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai offers a rich tapestry of attractions for visitors.
The flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, departing Shanghai at 1:30 a.m. and arriving in Vienna at 7:40 a.m. Return flights leave Vienna at 11:20 a.m., landing in Shanghai at 5:20 a.m. the next day, facilitating easy access to both cities for travelers.
