Double Daily Dallas-Rome Flights from American Airlines Next Summer

News

There are going to be more daily Dallas-Rome flights starting with next summer, as announced by American Airlines

American Airlines will double next summer's Dallas Fort Worth-to Rome Fiumicino flights, from 1 to 2 daily. It will only be available during peak season, but this will be the first time that the 5,614-mile (9.034 km) route has been flown daily. This route, which began in May 2017, had previously had two daily flights.

This means that American will be serving the Italian capital 7 days a week next summer, which is its highest number of flight to-date. After London Heathrow in summer 2019, Rome is now the second-most-served European airport.

American doubles Dallas-Rome

American will offer 2 daily DallasRome services starting June 1st through September 5th. American, the largest airline in the world, will return Paris CDG to 2 daily on June 1, a frequency that was last seen almost three years ago in January 2020.

American provides summer service between Dallas and Rome, with the current service returning on March 26th. Below are details about its Rome operation, including all times local.

  • Dallas Fort Worth-Rome: AA240, 14:40-08:00+1 (10h 20m block time)
  • Dallas Fort Worth-Rome: AA290, 18:25-11:45+1 (10h 20m) <-- new
  • Rome-Dallas Fort Worth: AA239, 10:00-14:50 (11h 50m)
  • Rome-Dallas Fort Worth: AA289, 13:45-18:35 (11h 50m) <-- new

The new service (AA290/AA289) will use the 234-seat, 787-8. The 777-200ER will be replaced by the larger, 285-seat 787-9 on the new daily. The 777 was originally scheduled to continue operating until the latest schedule update. This means that American will have 519 seats available for sale in the next summer's peak between Dallas and Rome, and each direction.

332,000 Dallas-Rome passengers

The US Department of Transportation reported that American transported 332,595 roundtrip passengers from Dallas to Rome between May 2017 and July 2022. This is the most recent data I have access to. The pandemic clearly impacted American's average seat load factor (SLF), which was 74%.

It is therefore useful to examine 2019 data. It carried 96,412 passengers in April-October that year with an SLF 86%. It fell 75% in April, while July (95%), June (90%) and September (89% offset it. It is not surprising that it has increased June-September frequency by double, but it will be difficult to ignore the negative impact it has on route performance.

Where were the passengers from Rome?

Booking data shows that 30% of Dallas-Rome passengers traveled point-to-point. They only travel between the two cities. It was not a large local market. Another 8% transited Rome Fiumicino.

It was, of course, about transiting over Dallas Fort Worth. 62% of the passengers did so, most of them having the US as their point-of-sale. Los Angeles to/from Rome was most popular, followed by Phoenix, Denver and Houston Intercontinental.
