easyJet Signs Memorandum for Long-Term Supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuel
easyJet, along with Braathens Renavia and Mana Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the long-term supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to support the airline’s operations in Europe and the UK. The agreement, which is expected to provide easyJet with up to 150,000 tons of SAF (including up to 75,000 tons of e-SAF) from 2030, is a significant step in the airline’s decarbonization strategy.
Advancing Sustainable Aviation with New Fuel Technology
The SAF to be supplied is expected to be produced using gasification of biomass and solid waste, with hydrogen generated from renewable energy sources. This innovative production method will result in carbon abatement exceeding 90%, helping the aviation industry to significantly reduce its emissions. The approach also supports a circular economy by utilizing waste and renewable resources to create sustainable fuel solutions.
World Fuel’s Role in Ensuring Seamless SAF Integration
World Fuel Services, a leading global fuel supplier, will manage the logistics, blending, storage, and regulatory compliance for the SAF supply. Their role in integrating SAF into easyJet’s supply chain ensures a reliable and efficient process that aligns with EU and UK sustainability mandates.
easyJet’s Commitment to SAF and Decarbonization
Raminder Shergill, easyJet’s Director of Tax & Fuel Strategy, expressed the airline’s commitment to supporting the growth of the SAF industry, stating, “We are delighted to invest in e-SAF, which is expected to reduce emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional jet fuel, aligning with our decarbonization strategy.”
Accelerating Sustainable Aviation with Key Partners
Per G. Braathen, founder of Braathens Renavia, highlighted the importance of the agreement in accelerating the availability of sustainable aviation fuel. He said, “We are proud to work with partners like easyJet and World Fuel to advance the use of SAF at scale.”
Duncan Storey, Senior Vice President at World Fuel Services, also commented, “This partnership underscores our commitment to increasing access to SAF in the aviation industry. By facilitating logistics and ensuring regulatory compliance, we aim to empower producers and connect sustainability-focused customers with innovative fuel solutions.”
A Strong Step Toward a Sustainable Aviation Future
As the aviation industry continues to move toward sustainability, this agreement between easyJet, Braathens Renavia, Mana Group, and World Fuel represents a vital step forward in reducing the carbon footprint of air travel. The partnership sets the stage for the continued growth and integration of sustainable aviation fuel, contributing to a cleaner, greener future for the airline industry.
