Frankfurt Becomes the World’s First Airport to Use Walk-Through Security Scanners
Frankfurt Airport has made history as the world’s first airport to regularly implement walk-through security scanners for passengers. Following a successful one-year test phase at Concourse A in Terminal 1, the German Federal Police have officially approved the full-scale use of the QPS Walk2000, a cutting-edge air travel security system developed by Rohde & Schwarz.
Faster and More Comfortable Security Screening
The QPS Walk2000 system allows passengers to walk through the scanner at a normal pace, eliminating the need to freeze in an awkward pose for scanning. This innovation provides a significant improvement in comfort and efficiency during security checks, enhancing the overall travel experience.
Currently, approximately 18,000 passengers pass through this checkpoint daily, and there are plans to extend this technology to additional lanes in Terminal 1 and the new Terminal 3.
A Step Forward in Airport Security
Alexander Laukenmann, head of Fraport AG’s aviation division, said:
“We’re the world’s first airport to set a new standard in passenger security with this 360° walk-through scanner. The collaboration with the German Federal Police during the test phase allowed us to optimize the scanner’s operation and ensure its certification. This project is part of our ongoing efforts to improve the passenger experience by using the latest technologies to streamline security checks while maintaining high standards of safety.”
AI-Powered Detection Technology
The QPS Walk2000 uses millimeter-wave technology that can penetrate clothing to detect potential threats. It also features an AI-based detection system that identifies dangerous objects in real time, allowing security personnel to focus on specific areas if an alarm is triggered, rather than needing to rescan the passenger entirely.
Andreas Hägele, head of the microwave imaging department at Rohde & Schwarz, commented:
“The successful testing and evaluation of the walk-through scanner by the German Federal Police and Fraport at Frankfurt Airport is a prime example of excellent collaboration. We are proud to contribute to this innovative and globally pioneering approach to airport passenger screening.”
Continued Investment in Security Technology
Since January 2023, Fraport has been managing the security checkpoints at Frankfurt Airport, investing around 22 million euros in advanced CT technology and innovative lane designs. These investments are part of a broader strategy to enhance airport security and streamline passenger processes.
While Fraport handles the organization and operation of the security lanes, the German Federal Police remain responsible for overseeing legal and technical requirements, certifying new inspection equipment, and ensuring overall aviation security.
Frankfurt Airport's adoption of the QPS Walk2000 sets a new benchmark for airport security, making it easier, faster, and more efficient for passengers while ensuring the highest safety standards.
