Historic Electric Train Test on Transpennine Route Marks Progress

An electric train has successfully conducted a test run between Manchester and Stalybridge, showcasing advancements in the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) aimed at providing faster, cleaner travel in the North of England.

In a landmark development for rail travel in Northern England, an electric train has completed a test run between Manchester and Stalybridge for the first time, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU). This breakthrough follows extensive work to install overhead line electrification, replace tracks for increased speeds, and enhance signaling between Manchester Victoria, Stalybridge, and Guide Bridge stations.

The test, involving a Northern Class 331 train, signifies a crucial step towards the realization of the TRU's ambitions to transform rail travel across the Manchester to York corridor, via Huddersfield and Leeds. Commencing its journey from Blackpool North, the train arrived at Manchester Piccadilly before embarking on its historic journey between Manchester Victoria and Stalybridge.

Neil Holm, TRU's Managing Director, highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating it demonstrates the project's transition into the delivery phase, with tangible benefits of the team's efforts beginning to materialize. Holm expressed gratitude towards passengers and local residents for their ongoing support throughout the project's duration.

Electric train services are expected to begin operation between Manchester and Stalybridge by the end of 2024, promising to deliver enhanced speed, reliability, and sustainability on this section of the route. This electrification effort represents the first phase of a broader initiative aimed at modernizing the entire Manchester to York line through future electrification projects.

In addition to the electrification work, the TRU is focused on improving stations along the route to elevate the passenger experience further. The introduction of a new digital signaling system is anticipated to bolster the network's reliability significantly. Moreover, plans to double the tracks between Huddersfield and Dewsbury are underway, aiming to increase the route's capacity and accommodate the expected rise in passenger and freight traffic.
