LLA and Wizz Air Collaborate for Environmental Progress with Airbus A321neo Fleet

London Luton Airport (LLA) has taken a significant step forward in its sustainability journey by confirming that all Wizz Air aircraft based at the airport have transitioned to the quieter, more fuel-efficient Airbus A321 Neos. This shift, effective from 31st March 2024, comes a year ahead of schedule, highlighting the proactive efforts in aviation sustainability by LLA and Wizz Air.

The move to Airbus A321neo aircraft is expected to achieve a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and cut nitrogen oxide emissions by half compared to Wizz Air’s older aircraft models. This change is part of LLA's ambitious Responsible Business Strategy, which focuses on minimizing the environmental and societal impacts of its operations and promoting sustainable travel.

Alberto Martin, CEO of London Luton Airport, emphasized the significance of this upgrade in the airport's fleet: “Our collaboration with Wizz Air marks a major advancement in reducing our carbon footprint through the adoption of newer, more efficient aircraft. This is a key element of our strategy to reach Net Zero airport emissions by 2040, addressing sustainability challenges directly with our partners.”

Marion Geoffroy, Managing Director at Wizz Air UK, also shared her perspective on the partnership: “The renewal of our fleet at London Luton with Airbus A321neo aircraft underscores our commitment to reducing carbon intensity. This is part of our broader strategy to decrease carbon emissions by 25% by 2030, leveraging the latest technology and innovation in our operations.”

The upgrade is backed by solid achievements in sustainability at LLA, which was one of the first major UK airports to reach Level 4 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation scheme. Additionally, LLA has been recognized for two consecutive years as a sector leader in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB), reflecting its commitment to sustainability in governance and infrastructure management.

Data from RDC Aviation Data confirms that a higher proportion of flights from LLA utilized new-generation aircraft compared to other major European airports between April and August 2023, further underscoring the airport’s commitment to modern, eco-friendly technology.

This transition not only supports LLA's environmental goals but also enhances the overall passenger experience with quieter and more comfortable flights, proving that sustainability and service excellence can go hand in hand.
