New tax for tourists visiting the Balearic Islands

The tourists who choose to spend their vacation in the Balearic Islands, Spain, this year, will have to pay a new fee that varies depending on the type of the hotel where they are accommodated in, with a price ranging between one and two euros per night, per person, according to the Daily Express newspaper

The fee for sustainable tourism was adopted in March and will be paid starting with the 1st of July by tourists who go to Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca or Formentera. Tourists who choose one, two or three star hotels will pay one euro per night, whilst those who choose four or five star hotels will pay two euros per night per person. The amount will be collected upon check-in. Those who choose to stand more than nine days will pay a less amount of money.
Authorities have issued a warning that the new tax will be also paid by those who rent villas or apartments or those who are staying in campgrounds. Another Island to introduce a tourism tax this year is Malta. The requested fee is of 50 cents per person per night. Officials explained that the raised funds will be used to protect the island's natural resources. Such fees existed for many years in countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands and Greece. Typically, the amount is included in the hotel price.
