Qantas' Order for 12 Widebody Jets Almost Doubles Its Boeing 787 Dreamliner Fleet

Airlines & Airports

Boeing and the Qantas Group have officially unveiled their joint decision, revealing that the airline has embraced the 787 Dreamliner range to revolutionize its expansive fleet of widebody aircraft.

In this strategic move, Qantas has submitted an order for four 787-9 airplanes and an additional eight 787-10 aircraft. Celebrated for its superior fuel efficiency and environmentally conscious performance, the 787 Dreamliner assumes a pivotal role in Qantas' overarching global expansion blueprint, engineered not only to abate carbon emissions in the upcoming decade but to also ensure sustainable practices well into the distant future.

Alan Joyce, at the helm of Qantas Group, articulated, “This is another multi-billion-dollar investment in the national carrier, and it’s great news for our customers and our people. The 787 and the GE engines fitted to them, are thoroughly proven and extremely capable.”

The strategic inclusion of the 787 into Qantas' aircraft cohort is harmonious with the airline's immediate and long-range sustainability ambitions. The aircraft's innovations yield a noteworthy reduction in fuel usage and emissions, amounting to a potential 25% decline, while its propulsion systems generate noticeably diminished sound levels compared to prior iterations.

Moreover, these airplanes are engineered to proficiently operate utilizing a blend of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), constituting an indispensable pathway in the quest for emission mitigation. The recently secured acquisition stands as a pivotal facet of Qantas' expansive fleet modernization endeavor, which substantially amplifies the carrier's aggregate fuel efficiency on a yearly basis.

Stan Deal, the Chief Executive Officer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, weighed in, affirming, “With its market-leading environmental performance, the 787 Dreamliner is central to Qantas’ unwavering commitment to operate one of the most sustainable and capable fleets in the airline industry. Both the 787-9 and 787-10 offer enhanced efficiency, flexibility and passenger comfort to connect Australia and destinations around the world.”

Armed to serve extensive international itineraries, the cost-effectiveness inherent to the 787 family empowers Qantas to inaugurate novel flight corridors and heighten the frequency of its existing network. The 787-9 possesses the ability to navigate distances of up to 7,565 nautical miles (14,010 km), seamlessly connecting Australia with North America and Europe.

Meanwhile, the larger 787-10, boasting a reach of 6,330 nautical miles (11,730 km), empowers the airline to cater to a plethora of sought-after international and regional routes. In the present scenario, Qantas effectively manages a fleet of 14 787-9 aircraft.

Functioning as a distinguished global aerospace enterprise, Boeing engages in the creation, production, and maintenance of commercial airplanes, defense systems, and space technologies, catering to clients spanning over 150 nations.

Serving as a foremost U.S. exporter, the corporation harnesses the expertise of a global network of suppliers to cultivate economic opportunities, foster sustainability, and nurture community welfare. Boeing's diverse workforce remains steadfastly dedicated to pioneering innovations for the future while upholding the bedrock principles of safety, quality, and integrity that underpin the organization.
