Schiphol Launches Tender for Architect Collaboration to Improve Terminal Design
Schiphol Airport is embarking on a major initiative to improve its terminal design and create a more cohesive and consistent passenger experience. The airport has launched a tender to find architects for long-term collaboration in streamlining the terminal’s appearance. With a €6 billion investment programme in place, the focus is on re-establishing a uniform identity for the airport’s terminals, which have become disjointed due to varied architectural styles over the years.
A Jigsaw Puzzle to Be Reassembled
Sybren Hahn, Executive Director of Schiphol Infrastructure, explained the vision behind the renovation: "Our terminal is like a jigsaw puzzle whose pieces have been disjointed for years, each in a slightly different shape. This has led to a fragmented appearance that does not enhance the passenger experience. Now it is time to put those loose pieces back together and create a harmonious, cohesive whole." The overarching goal is to create a seamless environment that feels welcoming and familiar for all travelers, whether arriving or departing.
Returning to Simplicity and Authenticity
Schiphol’s new design vision aims to return to the simplicity and authenticity that defined its original 1960s style. Over time, various design influences have fragmented the overall aesthetic, and future projects will be guided by a more unified architectural approach. The airport is looking for a Lead Architect to oversee the "Design Vision Schiphol," ensuring that all new developments and renovations align with this vision for consistency and recognizability.
Efficient Renovations Through Long-Term Architect Partnerships
Schiphol’s €6 billion investment plan for the next five years includes hundreds of projects aimed at enhancing the airport’s quality. To ensure the success of these initiatives, the airport is focusing on long-term relationships with architects to optimize costs and streamline processes. By working with a dedicated team of architects, Schiphol plans to maintain design integrity across all projects, ultimately improving the airport’s overall functionality and passenger satisfaction.
With its new focus on simplicity, consistency, and long-term collaboration, Schiphol Airport is poised to offer an improved experience for passengers and streamline renovation costs. This initiative is part of the airport’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and making every traveler feel at home.
