Storm Delivers Heavy Rain And Havoc To The Dominican Republic

News

Officials in the Dominican Republic report that at least 21 people died due to the severe rains that occurred over the weekend.

An inquiry has been begun after nine persons were killed when a wall of a highway tunnel collapsed in the capital city of Santo Domingo due to heavy rain. After the torrential rainfall, more than 13,000 people were moved to safer regions.

Homes were flooded, electricity was cut off, and bridges and highways were destroyed, according to the Emergency Operations Center (COE). Three of the victims were little children.

After 48 hours of heavy precipitation, Dominican President Luis Abinader declared it the "biggest rainfall event ever" in the country's history.

The Caribbean country has been hit by heavy rain, and videos posted online show streets flooded and cars washed away.

According to the COE, the storm had an impact on more than 2,600 dwellings and resulted in the rescue of over 2,500 people. As of Sunday afternoon, 45 towns were reported to be completely cut off from the outside world.

It has been raining since Sunday due to a tropical depression, and the US embassy has warned that it will continue to rain in many areas of the nation on Monday. It was also noted that twenty-eight of the country's thirty-two provinces are still on red and yellow weather warnings.

In order to assess damages to the educational facilities and ensure the protection of the children, President Abinader has announced that classes will be cancelled until Wednesday. He also expressed his condolences the lives lost in the havoc and extended his unrestrained support to all those impacted by this disaster in a tweet sent on X.

The AFP news agency stated that four Americans and three Haitians were among the dead.
