SWISS Airlines Names 20 Aircrafts After Tourist Areas and Resorts

News

SWISS, Switzerland's flag carrier, is closing its 20th-anniversary celebrations with the naming of twenty of its Airbus A220-100s or A220-300s in honor tourist areas and resorts across Europe.

This partnership with Switzerland Tourism is intended to promote places like Haslital, Saas-Fee and Val Surses.

SWISS announced Tuesday that it would baptize twenty aircraft in memory of Swiss resorts and tourist areas. This was possible thanks to a collaboration between SWISS Tourism and Switzerland Tourism. They invited tourist destinations from all over the country to submit imaginative presentations about why they should be chosen. Over 50 entries were received. They were later evaluated by a panel of judges, and twenty of them were selected.

Grisons had three resorts and tourist areas that were most popular (Lenzerheide and Val Surses) Aargau and Bern are also among the cantons that have inns and selected areas. Anja Beeler is the Head of Strategic Communications & Content Creation at SWISS.

"We received so many outstanding and original entries, and it was far from easy to select our 20 winners. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our participants for all their creative contributions. And we're really looking forward to carrying the names of all the varied and unique winning Swiss tourist areas and resorts on our aircraft out into the world."

The SWISS social media community also selected three winners from the 20 (Bad Zurzach and Nendaz), They will each have their own ceremony to name the aircraft in a SWISS hangar. In 2023, there will be two of these ceremonies in Zurich and one at Geneva.

SWISS and the Airbus A220 go hand-in-hand. In 2016, the first commercial flight of then-Bombardier C-Series aircraft was made by the Swiss flag carrier. It flew between Zurich, France and Zurich. Airbus purchased the C-Series program from Bombardier and renamed the Airbus A220 family. After receiving its 30th aircraft, SWISS began the introduction of the Airbus A220 fleet.

SWISS currently has nine A220-100s as well as 23 A220-300s. Two of these variants are however wet-leased by airBaltic. According to data from ch-aviation, the A220-100s can carry 125 passengers in one cabin while the A220-300s can hold up to 145 passengers.

Cirium reports that SWISS operates approximately 636 weekly flights using its A220 fleet (414 flights for the A220-300, 222 for the A220-100).

SWISS, the flag carrier for Switzerland, operates from Zurich Airport. It is a member the Lufthansa Group, and was established in March 2002 following the bankruptcy of Swissair. According to Cirium data, it is a Star Alliance member and currently flies towards 75 destinations worldwide.

After a difficult start, in which SWISS tried to attract Air France-KLM, British Airways and other potential investors, SWISS finally signed a deal in March 2005 with Lufthansa, integrating the new carrier in the Lufthansa Group. The official takeover of SWISS was completed in 2007. SWISS is still a member of the Lufthansa group. The airline currently has 107 aircraft in its fleet.
