The Port of Plymouth Prepares for Surge in Cruise Ship Visits
Port of Plymouth set for 40% cruise ship arrival boost in 2024, enhancing local economy and upgrading facilities.
The Port of Plymouth, located on England's southwest coast in Devon, is gearing up for a significant increase in cruise ship activity in 2024, with a projected 40% rise in arrivals. This upsurge reflects the port's growing popularity among cruise lines and its strategic position as Britain's Ocean City, boasting access to both the Bristol and English Channels.
In 2024, the port anticipates welcoming 14 cruise ships between April and October, marking a notable boost to the local economy through increased spending by over 10,000 expected cruise guests and crew on tours, shopping, and dining. The lineup of visiting ships includes luxury and expedition vessels from notable cruise lines such as Seabourn, Exploris, Windstar Cruises, Ponant, Silversea Cruises, Oceania, and the UK’s newest cruise brand, Ambassador Cruise Line.
This influx of visitors is supported by the efforts of Destination Plymouth and the Cruise Plymouth Partnership, which aim to enhance the city's appeal to international cruise operators. The port's commitment to hospitality is evident in the warm welcomes provided by Cruise Plymouth Ambassador volunteers, the Town Crier, and performances by the Plymouth Maritime Corps of Drums.
Amanda Lumley, Chief Executive of Destination Plymouth, emphasizes the city's concerted efforts to position itself as a premier cruise destination, highlighting its rich array of attractions including the National Marine Aquarium, Mount Edgcumbe House and Gardens, and the historic Barbican district.
To accommodate the growing cruise traffic, the port's facilities at Millbay Dock are undergoing significant renovations, set to complete in 2025, to improve berthing and passenger amenities. These upgrades, led by Associated British Ports, are part of a broader strategy to bolster Plymouth's status in the global cruise market and complement its role as a key ferry hub connecting the UK with France and Spain.
The Port of Plymouth's expansion reflects a broader trend among UK ports like Portsmouth, which is also preparing for record-breaking cruise passenger arrivals in 2024, underscoring the UK's rising prominence in the global cruise industry.
