United Airlines Introduces Larger Overhead Bins on Embraer E175

Airlines & Airports

United Airlines is enhancing passenger convenience by installing new, larger overhead bins on its Embraer E175 fleet, aiming to nearly eliminate gate-checking of bags.

United Airlines is leading the way in passenger convenience by being the first airline to equip its Embraer E175 aircraft, operated by SkyWest, with new, larger overhead bins. This upgrade will significantly increase the storage space for carry-on luggage, providing room for an additional 29 bags, which represents an 80% increase in space. By the end of this year, passengers will see these spacious bins on 50 aircraft with a 76-seat configuration, and United is considering extending this feature to more than 150 aircraft by the end of 2026.

This initiative is expected to drastically reduce the need for one million annual passengers to gate-check their luggage on over 150,000 E175 flights, streamlining the boarding process and enhancing overall satisfaction at the gate. Linda Jojo, United's chief customer officer, highlighted the positive feedback from customers regarding the new bins and interiors, emphasizing the improvement in gate and boarding experiences.

In addition to accommodating more carry-on bags, United is retrofitting its domestic narrowbody fleet with larger bins and has already equipped more than 200 mainline aircraft with bins that can fit every passenger's carry-on bag. The inclusion of braille and tactile placards on each E175 aircraft equipped with the new bins underscores United's commitment to accessibility, aligning with the airline's broader initiatives announced in 2023.

United Airlines, along with United Express, operates an average of over 4,000 daily flights to more than 350 airports across six continents. As the world's largest operator of the E175 and the carrier with the most seat-miles in 2023, United's latest upgrades are part of its continuous effort to lead in providing an exceptional travel experience for its passengers, whether on regional or international flights.
