Wizz Air Expands Operations with New Routes and Base at Bucharest Baneasa Airport

Airlines & Airports

Wizz Air continues its rapid growth in Bucharest, unveiling plans for two new Airbus A321neo aircraft, the launch of three new routes, and the opening of a second base at Bucharest Baneasa Airport from April 1, 2025. This expansion will increase Wizz Air’s presence in Romania, providing more connectivity between Romania and Europe, as well as budget-friendly options for travelers.

New Aircraft and Expanded Summer 2025 Schedule

The addition of two Airbus A321neo aircraft will increase Wizz Air's capacity by 18% for the summer 2025 season, with nearly 750,000 additional seats added to the schedule. This move further strengthens Wizz Air’s position in Romania, where it currently operates 175 routes from 13 Romanian airports.

New Routes from Bucharest Otopeni

The airline will introduce three new routes from Bucharest Otopeni Airport:

  • Gran Canaria (Spain): Starting June 17, 2025
  • Frankfurt Hahn (Germany): Starting August 1, 2025
  • Friedrichshafen (Germany): Starting August 2, 2025

Prices for these routes start as low as 29.99 EUR. Additionally, Wizz Air will increase frequencies on nine existing routes, including destinations like Dortmund, Stuttgart, Lyon, and Pisa.

New Base at Bucharest Baneasa Airport

From April 1, 2025, Wizz Air will operate its second base at Bucharest Baneasa Airport, expanding its operations further. New routes from this base will include:

  • Abu Dhabi (UAE): Starting March 30, 2025
  • London Luton (UK): Starting April 1, 2025
  • Warsaw (Poland): Starting June 9, 2025

With prices starting from 24.99 EUR, these new routes will offer even more choices for both leisure and business travelers.

Wizz Air's Commitment to Romania

Since beginning operations in Romania in 2006, Wizz Air has continuously increased its investment in the country. The airline now operates from six bases in Romania and employs over 1,500 people locally.

Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, emphasized:
“We are excited to establish a new base at Bucharest Baneasa Airport and launch three new routes from the capital. This expansion will provide almost 750,000 additional seats for passengers in summer 2025 and help us reach nearly 8 million seats annually from Bucharest. As we grow, we are proud to contribute to the Romanian economy and offer even more choices to our passengers.”

Sustainability and Fleet Growth

As part of its WIZZ 500 strategy, Wizz Air is committed to sustainability with one of the youngest, most fuel-efficient fleets in the industry. The expansion not only enhances travel options but also reinforces Wizz Air’s dedication to environmental responsibility while maintaining its position as Romania’s leading airline.

This growth highlights Wizz Air’s continuing role in enhancing connectivity, providing affordable travel options, and contributing to the local economy.
