Royal De Luxe's Huge Puppets Outdoor Performances - Where To See The Shows
The French group known for their mechanical marionettes will perform on the streets of Europe.
The compelling show features giant puppets, operated by professional puppeteers, backed by poignant music, while the combination sometimes moves audiences to tears.
The French street theatre troupe Royal de Luxe is known for its large mechanical puppets. The group, originally established in 1979 in Aix-en-Provence, south of France, and currently headquartered in the city of Nantes, started with unconventional street theatrical plays before producing a citywide puppet show over the course of several days in 1993.
Over the years, its massive marionettes and team of talented puppeteers have toured not just around Europe, but also to Australia, Chile, and Mexico. And every performance has a fanciful origin tale, that transports you to another universe, according to fans worldwide.
As many as 30 red-clad puppeteers utilize pulleys, ropes, and their own body weight to bring the amazing dolls to life. In 2018, Royal de Luxe's event in Liverpool, UK, attracted over 3 million fans.
This year, for the sixth time, Royal de Luxe will be visiting Antwerp, Belgium in August, as the Zomer van Antwerpen festival will feature the robotic puppets until September 3.
The mystery program has yet to be revealed, but it will likely include the theatre group's newest production, the Bull Machin dog. In September of 2022, the performers brought out their latest creation: the huge bulldog, which made its debut in Villeurbanne, France, with an enormous cigar hanging from the corners of its mouth and an eye patch in honour of Winston Churchill.
The festival offers a wide range of theatrical performances, from the rock 'n' roll circus of Nofit State to the creepy kinetic artwork Charon, composed entirely of bones.
The Royal de Luxe enormous puppets may be seen in Nantes and Saint-Herblain in France as well, between September 22 and 24, especially if you're a dog lover interested in seeing some enormous canine specimens. A fan favourite at Royal de Luxe, the slim black dog Xolo, will be joining the clumsy but endearing Bull Machin. As part of the festivities honouring Villeurbanne's designation as the first French Capital of Culture in 2022, the two characters were displayed around town for the entertainment of the spectators.
