Southwest Airlines Seeks Nonstop Service DCA to Las Vegas

Airlines & Airports

Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) has submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for daily nonstop service between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas (LAS). The proposed service is part of an effort to increase competition and provide lower fares in the DCA-LAS market.

Public and Political Support

More than half of the public comments filed with the DOT in response to this proposal have been in favor, with over 11,000 U.S. travelers registering their support. Political, community, and business leaders have also submitted numerous letters endorsing Southwest’s application.

Enhancing Travel Options

Currently, the DCA to LAS route is underserved, with only one daily nonstop flight operated by another airline. Southwest’s entry into this market would introduce the first head-to-head competition, expected to stimulate lower average fares and increase passenger traffic. Additionally, Southwest plans to offer the only one-stop, same-plane service between DCA and Sacramento International Airport (SMF) via LAS, enhancing travel options for passengers.

David J. Herrera, President of Norwegian Cruise Line, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative: “Hydrogen is going to play an important role in decarbonizing aviation, so we need to lay the groundwork now. The Gatwick hub is a positive signal of the industry’s intent to adapt and work together towards decarbonization. With support from regulators and policymakers, projects like this will prepare UK airports for a hydrogen transition, critical to achieving our net zero ambitions.”

Economic and Community Impact

U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen highlighted the economic benefits of the proposed route: “Travel and tourism are central to Nevada’s economy—sustaining hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs, bringing millions in economic development, and supporting our small businesses. Increasing the number of flights to Las Vegas will create more opportunities for visitors and bolster our local economy.”

Rosemary Vassiliadis, Clark County Director of Aviation, added: “We have seen a great deal of enthusiasm from our local elected leaders, national unions, utility companies, and the business community in support of this proposed route. Providing this much-needed service between the nation's capital and the sports and entertainment capital of the world will open up new opportunities for business and leisure travelers by enhancing competition, expanding access, and decreasing ticket prices.”

Southwest Airlines' Commitment

Brook Sorem, Vice President of Network Planning at Southwest Airlines, stated: “The DCA to LAS route delivers what’s most important to Customers—choice and flexibility. We believe more Customers will benefit from lower fares while enjoying the airline that offers legendary Hospitality and unrivaled flexibility.”
