Turkey - 4th on the 2021 world destinations list

News

“Some 421 million people travelled the globe as tourists in 2019. Nearly 30 million tourists were in Turkey,” stated Recep Yavuz, the head of the Tourism Work Group in Antalya.

France was on top of the list with 40 million tourists, while Mexico scored second with 31.9 million and Spain settled with the third place with 31.2 million. Turkey was followed by Italy with 26.3 million tourists.

The United States was on the sixth place with 22.1 million, followed by Greece - 14.7 million and Austria - 12.7 million tourists in 2021.

Germany and Croatia were last on the list, with 11.7 million and 10.6 million visitors respectively.

“Due to the pandemic, around 1 billion people could not travel. Fareast and Asian countries felt the harshest blow of the pandemic. China has been erased from the tourism map”, Yavuz added.

Thailand was also affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, with only 400.000 visitors in 2021 (reported to be on the 53rd place on the list).

Fortunately, the western Mediterranean countries regained considerable tourism revenues during 2021, despite the pandemic, this way reviving their economies.

Nevertheless, Spain and Greece lost tens of millions of tourists in 2021 when compared to previous years.

However, “with the latest data in the report, we see that Turkey’s share in the global economy was around 7 percent in 2021,” Yavuz concluded.

Turkey is famous for its historic ruins, crowded cities, astonishing beaches, mountains, great food, amazing local markets and overall convenient prices. Either choosing a visit in the historic city of Istanbul or preferring a relaxing beach holiday, Turkey can be the ideal destination for people looking for an immersive travel experience with lots of fun and leisure.

From crystal clear sea waters and incredible mountains to countless historic ruins and iconic cities and villages, great museums, a unique kitchen culture, famous Turkish bath (hamams), various natural wonders and kind people renowned for their hospitality, this Anatolian country has it all for a memorable holiday with the entire family.
