Wizz Air Announces New Routes to London and Saudi Arabia
Wizz Air plans to significantly expand its routes in Saudi Arabia this year.
Wizz Air has been expanding its network over the past few days. This week, Wizz Air launched its first flights linking several countries. This rapid expansion is part of the airline’s post-covid growth strategies. The airline is leveraging the demand for air travel and plans to quickly build one of Europe's largest networks. The routes that were launched this week linked most European cities to the Middle Eastern country Saudi Arabia.
Wizz Air has launched a new route linking its young hub at London Gatwick Airport, (LGW), with France's Lyon Saint Exupery Airport. (LYS) The inaugural flight launched on January 10. The flight will operate during winter months and is intended to be seasonal. This route is expected to be very popular with travelers who want to visit the French Alps.
This route will be operated four days a week with flights every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Marion Geoffroy (Managing Director of Wizz Air UK) shared this information about the excitement surrounding the new route.
"We are delighted to celebrate the launch yet another route from Gatwick Airport. Lyon is well-known for its Old Town, which is UNESCO-listed. It is also just a short drive from the French Alps' most renowned ski resorts. This launch demonstrates our commitment to providing better connectivity, more choices, and cheaper fares to UK customers. We are looking forward to welcoming customers aboard our efficient, young, and sustainable aircraft."
Wizz Air launched two flights to Saudi Arabia's Riyadh Khalid International Airport (RUH) on Monday, January 9th. The first route connects Hungary’s Budapest Airport (BUD), with RUH. One route connects Romania's Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport with RUH. Although the inaugural flights were celebrated earlier in the week, regular service will not begin until September 1. The airline will begin regular service on both routes and offer two weekly flights. One flight will fly on Monday and Friday to both routes.
Fahd Hamidaddin (CEO and Member of Board, Saudi Tourism Authority) shared these details about the new routes.
"Saudi's partnership continues to grow with Wizz Air. Already one of the most important partnerships in the world and the announcement of two new connections between Budapest Airport and Bucharest Airport, Saudi Arabia, ensures that Saudi Arabia will continue to be an attractive destination for Europeans to explore and visit. This announcement also confirms our commitment to a Saudi experience that is affordable and accessible.
Wizz Air will expand its network in Saudi Arabia significantly over the course of 2023. The expansion plan includes three new routes linking Europe and Saudi Arabia. Wizz Air launched three new routes to Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport on January 12, 2018. Three routes to Jeddah will be offered by Wizz Air: one connecting BUH and JED; another connecting BUD and JED; and finally, a route connecting Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport FCO with JED.
Each route will be flown twice per week. These routes will not be operated regularly by the airline until later in the year. On September 1, the BUH-JED route is expected to be in regular service. It will fly once every Monday, Friday. BUD-JED will begin regular service on October 1st. It will operate every Tuesday and Saturday. The FCO-JED route, which will operate every Wednesday and Saturday starting November 1, is also available.
