251 million Nights Spent in the EU in 3rd Quarter of 2022
Eurostat published data showing that guests spent approximately 251 million nights in Europe during the third quarter 2022.
This figure is up 24 percent compared to the same period 2021.
These data also reveal that platform tourism has outperformed the summer levels in 2019, when platforms reported about 230 million guest nights. SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Eurostat reports that bookings rose steadily in the first half 2022, taking into consideration the recovery of booking numbers during the second quarter of 2021.
Additionally, the number of nights booked in the first six months last year was 199.4 millions, compared with the 83.8 million nights booked in the same period in 2021, and 193.3 million nights in 2019, which represents a slight increase of 3.2 percent.
According to the same authority, 250.9 million nights were recorded in the third quarter 2022, as compared with 202.3 million in 2021, and 230.4 millions in 2019.
Eurostat points out that these numbers reached in 2022 can be compared with 2021 to show a strong recovery across all 31 countries (EU and EFTA), but they have differences compared to 2019.
Nights spent in Portugal 4% down, but Coastal Destinations remain the most popular
While overnights rose in France, Sweden, Belgium and France during the third quarter 2022, they were still below 2019 levels. Portugal, at -4 percent, was the most prominent destination with a substantial decline.
Traditional coastal destinations were also very popular in the second quarter 2022. The most popular regions in Spain were Andalucia with 6.5 million guest night, Jadranska Hrvatska (Croatian) with 5.5 million guest night, and Provence-Alpes –Cote d'Azur, France with 5.2million guest nights.
They had spent over four million nights in these three regions together with Catalonia, Spain, and Ile de France, France. France and Spain each had six areas in their top 20 regions, while Italy and Portugal had two and one, respectively.
Eurostat reported in July that the number of rooms booked through Airbnb, Expedia Group and Tripadvisor for tourism increased by 34% between 2021 and 2022.
This is why the recovery rate was still below pre-pandemic levels of 29% when 512 million nights were booked.
