Air India Unveils Completely Redesigned Cabins for Boeing 777 Fleet

News

Air India's brand reveal is the biggest news story in every publication.

Social media is also awash with opinions about the new livery of the airline. Air India's interiors were also discussed during the August 10th media event. CEO Campbell Wilson gave the first glimpse of the four cabins which will be featured on the Boeing 777 fleet in the coming year.

Air India's customers may have different opinions, but one thing they all agree on is that the aircraft needs to be refurbished. Tata Group has set aside $400 million for the task.

While it's still a while before we see the new cabins Air India will be using on its Boeing 777 aircraft, the CEO Campbell Wilson has presented a video that is two minutes long.

The video takes us to four different cabins: first class, economy, premium economy and business class. First and business class seats are dominated by brown, beige and gray, while economy and Premium Economy have dark red or maroon chairs with gray headrests.

The airline will keep first class on all 777s. The video showed two middle-row seats with plenty of space and a divider that could be pulled up in the middle. Privacy doors and flat seats are two obvious features. But what stands out the most is wireless charging.

Air India's outdated business class is miles away from the new product. It features a sliding door, wireless chargers, and flat seats.

The video shows that a large portion of the plane is dedicated to premium economy seating, a first on older widebody aircraft. These seats are larger and offer more room than economy. They also have footrests. Although both economy and Premium Economy seats appear to have the same color scheme the fabric of the economy seats has tiny prints, as opposed to plain seats in the premium economy.

New cabins in the second half 2024

Mr. Wilson stated that the first Air India widebody aircraft, which has 43 of them, will be entering the hangar in about one year for an interior refurbishment. Passengers can expect to see the new 777 cabins by the second half 2024.

Wilson explained that Air India, which is leasing and purchasing 25 widebody aircraft this year with similar products and six of these aircraft are already in flight, understands the urgency of the need for an improved onboard product. By the end this year, a third of Air India's widebody aircraft will feature products similar to this.

In addition to the new seats, the in-flight entertainment will feature 1,700 hours worth of content. This is the most of any Indian airline. It's also on par with global airlines. Wilson said that Air India will completely revamp its long-haul fleet over the next two and a half years. The planes ordered from the most recent order will have the latest technology.
