Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Revolutionizes Baggage Handling with Innovative Technologies

News

Schiphol Airport is testing new technologies to improve efficiency of the employees who are working in the baggage handling hall.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has teamed up with two baggage handling companies to test new technologies to improve the efficiency of the employees working in the baggage handling hall.

SchnegenVisaInfo.com reported that a robot designed for Schiphol could be used to lift suitcases in place of a baggage handler.

Schiphol has also announced that a new lifting tool is being tested, which allows suitcases to easily be pushed on the luggage belt.

Sybren hahn, Director of Asset Management for Royal Schiphol Group said that the work done in the baggage handling area is essential to allowing travellers to travel.

"We want everyone at Schiphol to have a good workplace and therefore want to use technology to improve working conditions. In the coming period, we will test at least five more lifting aids and several fully automated solutions, some of which are new in aviation," Hahn added.

Aviapartner employees are using a robot that was developed specifically for Schiphol. Schiphol stated that it expects to be able to lift up to 80 percent of baggage because they work with the robot. The ultimate goal for the airport is to lift 90 percent of baggage.

"The Danish Cobot Lift robot was originally used in other sectors, such as bakeries. Over the past six months, the robot has been further developed for lifting suitcases and for use at Schiphol," the statement mentions.

The report also shows that KLM staff are testing in the baggage hall a lifting tool that allows suitcases to easily be pushed on the luggage belt.

Airports are testing the solution. They will also test several alternatives over the next few days to determine the best option. Every work site will be equipped with a lifting aid for employees to use.

Schiphol Airport is one of the busiest airports on the Dutch mainland. During the May Day holidays that began on April 22, approximately 66,000 travellers were expected to depart the airport each day.

In a press release issued on April 12th, the airport stated that departures would exceed 70,000.

On May Day, this year, it was anticipated that the number of passengers flying out of this airport would be 14 percent higher than the previous year.

This airport's new technology will make travel easier.
