Amtrak Issues Summer Travel Advisory Due to Maintenance and Upgrades

News

The railroad has warned that passengers in the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions may suffer slight delays on trains operating along the NEC while track repair carries on until September 30.

According to Amtrak, the company has spent $124 million on train upgrades this summer, out of a total commitment of around $130 million. The money came from a combination of sources, including federal programs, state and municipal governments, and Amtrak.

Amtrak VP of Marketing and Communications Laura Mason has said that improving railroad infrastructure is a crucial component of the mission to create a new age of rail through upgrading the Amtrak fleet, constructing new bridges and passageways, restoring stations, and reimagining the customer experience for the contemporary day.

“We’re grateful to our partners for their cooperation and flexibility as we advance these critical projects to achieve a state of good repair and enhance the overall Amtrak customer experience,” VP Mason added.

For the summer of 2023, the NEC plans to finish projects such as resurfacing over a million square feet of track, modernizing 25 miles of track in the Mid-Atlantic, and upgrading 40 track junctions around the region.

Although personnel is on duty 24/7 to minimize disruptions to passengers, new train timetables have been implemented to allow for the upgrades and prevent conflicts with railroad agencies.

The repairs are expected to be finished at the end of September.

Customers should also be advised that Amtrak services may be disrupted due to extreme heat this summer season, as rails, bridges, and overhead wires may expand in the very hot weather.
