Artist Commissions for 2022 announced by Abu Dhabi Art
Abu Dhabi Art has revealed the artists selected to produce new public works to be displayed in key historical landmarks across the Arab state.
This year’s selection is part of the Artist Commissions in Cultural Places project. New works by Abdullah Al Saadi, Marinella Senatore, Shilpa Gupta, and Conrad Shawcross will be displayed at Al Ain and Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi Art's home.
The art installations will be strategically located in selected settings in order for the works to build a vivid relationship with their environment, while connecting both past and present.
“Artist Commissions in Cultural Sites is back this year with new commissioned works, enabling visitors to discover the heritage of the emirate hosting the art fair and view first-hand what this year’s artists Abdullah Al Saadi, Conrad Shawcross and Shilpa Gupta have conceived for Al Ain.
“We are also delighted to be showing Marinella Senatore’s work at the entrance to the fair. In diverse ways, these artists invite visitors to reflect on community, social participation, language, memory, the human body and finally, light,” declared Dyala Nusseibeh, Director of Abu Dhabi Art.
The concept of community is an important part of the chosen works that will be displayed during the cultural event, as this theme has taken on greater significance in the aftermath of the Covid-19 outbreak and the global lockdowns.
2022 Artist Commissions in Cultural Sites artworks will feature Quipu Alphabet paintings collection by Abdullah Al Saadi, to be exhibited at Al Jahili Fort; Bodies in Alliance LED installation by Marinella Senatore, displayed at Manarat Al Saadiyat; Shilpa Gupta’s video StillTheyKnowNotWhatIDream played at Al Ain’s Al Jahili Fort; Patterns of Absence - Desert Beacon series by Conrad Shawcross, available at Al Ain Oasis.
Artist Commissions in Cultural Places is one of Abu Dhabi Art's permanent exhibitions set to promote new artwork experiences as well as raise awareness on significant historical and cultural attractions in the emirate. The initiative aims to boost the region's arts sector and generate constructive debates, in accordance to nowadays audience requests.
The installations will be on display until January 22, 2023.
