Delta Flight Late Due To Bee Colony

News

A trip from Houston to Atlanta was delayed by almost three hours after a swarm of bees landed on a parked Delta Air Lines plane.

After pictures from the incident went viral on social media, Delta issued a detailed statement explaining the delay. To get rid of the bees, Delta Air Lines pushed the plane away from the gate with ground equipment and no people on board. The airline did not specify what further actions were explored. Concerns over the bees' safety and the need to prevent contamination of air plane surfaces both contributed to the hold-up. Simultaneously, passengers were offered an apology from Delta.

Swarms of bees on planes are unusual but not unprecedented. In 2019, an Air India flight was delayed due to a swarm of the insects. In that instance, water jets were employed to dislodge the bees from the Kolkata-Agartala bound plane.

In 2016, 20,000 bees forced the temporary grounding of an F-22 Raptor combat jet. The problem in Virginia was solved with the assistance of a beekeeper, which became increasingly familiar sights at major airports. Several airfields across the United States and abroad have implemented "pollinator-friendly practices and programs" according to a report published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in 2022. Hamburg Airport in Germany was the first to install an apiary on airport grounds in 1999. To better understand airport bee initiatives, the FAA is conducting studies.

However, there have been no airport beekeeping initiatives at the terminal where the delay occurred on Wednesday due to bees. Nevertheless, a representative for Bush International Airport recently reported that plans are in the works to start a beekeeping program at the site.
