Delta Launches Rescue Fares After Spirit Airlines Shutdown

Airlines & Airports

Delta Air Lines has stepped in to support travellers and employees caught up in Spirit Airlines' sudden suspension of operations, offering discounted fares and dedicated resources for affected staff.

For passengers, Delta has made reduced nonrefundable fares available across all domestic markets where Spirit operates — including both nonstop routes and one-stop connections through Delta's hubs — for a five-day window to help travellers make last-minute arrangements. The discounted fares also extend to all US-Latin America routes where Spirit was active. Crucially, Delta has made additional seats available even on flights that are close to full, giving passengers more options when space would otherwise be limited. The fares are open to all customers, not just those directly impacted by the Spirit shutdown, and can be booked through the Delta app or delta.com.

For Spirit's workforce, Delta has activated two support mechanisms. Spirit pilots and flight attendants can access standby travel on Delta flights for the next ten days under existing industry agreements. Separately, qualified Spirit employees looking for new roles can apply through a dedicated Delta careers microsite designed to flag their applications directly to recruiters.

Delta acknowledged the difficulty of the moment for Spirit's team, framing its response as practical assistance during a disruptive period for both employees and the travelling public. The moves mirror similar steps taken by American Airlines, which also launched rescue fares and a recruitment push following Spirit's collapse — underscoring how significantly the shutdown has rippled across the US aviation market.
