Dublin Airport to Continue Cherished Christmas Blessing of the Planes Tradition

Dublin Airport confirms the 77th annual Blessing of the Planes this December, continuing a tradition that started in 1947, with activities reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and respect for all faiths.

 

Dublin Airport, operated by daa, is set to host the 77th annual Christmas Blessing of the Planes in December 2024. This enduring tradition, led by Fr Des Doyle, the airport’s Catholic chaplain, highlights the facility’s commitment to both tradition and the diverse spiritual needs of its community.

The blessing, which started with an Aer Lingus aircraft in 1947, has been a significant part of the airport's Christmas Day activities since 1967, symbolizing a prayer for safety and security in aviation. The tradition has adapted over the years, particularly with new aviation security protocols introduced in January 2024 that limit airside access. However, due to Fr Doyle's extensive role and security clearances at Dublin Airport, he continues to have the necessary access to perform these blessings airside, ensuring the tradition remains uninterrupted.

Kenny Jacobs, CEO of daa, expressed his enthusiasm for the continuity of this tradition, noting, "While we are always looking forward, we also deeply respect our traditions. The Christmas blessing by Fr Des is a cherished part of his ministry, reflecting our broader commitment to safety and spiritual support at the airport."

Recognizing the diverse spiritual landscape of modern Ireland, Dublin Airport also provides a multi-faith prayer room in Terminal 2, welcoming individuals of all faiths and beliefs to find solace and express their spirituality. The airport is open to engaging with representatives from any faith who wish to perform religious or secular blessings, ensuring these activities are in line with the aviation regulator’s security protocols and take place landside.

Additionally, in 2024, Dublin Airport will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the completion of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church, a landmark that has served the spiritual needs of countless travelers and employees since its inauguration.

Through these initiatives, Dublin Airport continues to demonstrate its dedication to being a welcoming space for all, fostering an environment of inclusion and respect for various cultural and religious traditions.
