Dublin Named 2024 European Capital of Smart Tourism
Dublin is one of the most appreciated travel destinations and it is no wonder that it was named the European Capital of Smart Tourism.
In a recent announcement, the European Commission has designated Dublin, the capital of Ireland, and Grosseto, an Italian urban center, as the European Smart Tourism Capital and the European Green Smart Tourism Pioneer for the year 2024.
This verdict stems from a comprehensive evaluation of their accomplishments in the domains of approachability, resilience, alongside the realms of digitization and hereditary cultural elements, according to a report from SchengenVisaInfo.com.
Dublin and Grosseto secured their positions from a collective pool of 40 destinations spanning 21 nations, as ascertained through a European panel session conducted on November 28.
Cities emerging victorious are set to gain advantages in the form of uniquely crafted sculptures and supportive promotional measures.
"Together with the finalist cities, they will also join a network of smart and sustainable tourism destinations in Europe. This network facilitates the sharing of knowledge and good practices through workshops and a guide,” mentioned the European Commission.
The contest champions intelligent tourism in the nations comprising the European Union, offering accolades to urban centers displaying resourceful approaches to accessibility, in addition to digitization, sustainability, and cultural heritage, among other criteria.
"The European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism competition, the successor to the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) competition, recognises smaller destinations with successful strategies for sustainable tourism through green practices. The winning cities of both competitions serve as models for smart and sustainable travel," the European Commission also said.
The European Commission has launched dual competitions aimed at amplifying smart and sustainable tourism within the union. These competitions aspire to advance interconnectivity, reinforce destinations, and simplify the interchange of superior methodologies.
The European Capital of Smart Tourism considers accomplishments by European urban centers as tourist attractions across four core categories: ease of access, resilience, digitization, and cultural heritage along with ingenuity.
Simultaneously, the European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism, following the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) contest, honors smaller destinations that have effectively executed strategies to invigorate sustainable tourism through the adoption of eco-friendly transitions.
Smart Tourism stands as an initiative from the European Commission financed under the COSME Programme.
Smart tourism aims to infuse innovation into the tourism sector, leveraging digital technologies to provide tourists with more streamlined, personalized, and gratifying experiences while contributing to the endurance and oversight of tourism destinations.
Authorities in European nations have intensified their endeavors to facilitate the swift recuperation of the tourism sector, profoundly impacted by the proliferation of the Coronavirus and its emerging variants.
