EU Temporarily Protects Over 4 Million Ukrainian Refugees

As of June 30, 2023 the European Union has granted temporary protection to almost 4,07 million Ukrainians who left Ukraine because of the Russian invasion.

Germany, among EU member states, received the highest share of refugees from Ukraine who were granted temporary protection. It provided shelter to approximately 1,133.420 people, or 28 per cent, of the total beneficiaries.

SchengenVisaInfo.com reported that Poland was second, with 977.740 people (or 24 percent of the total) and the Czech Republic third, with 349.140 people (9 per cent).

Eurostat has recently released data showing that the number of Ukrainians granted temporary protection in the EU increased by 45.800 or 1.1% compared to May 2023.

These data show that the majority of the growth was observed in Germany (21,830 people, or 2%) and Czechia (9,050 people, or 2.7%), as well as Ireland (3,100 people, or 3.7%).

"The main EU countries hosting beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine were Germany (1 133 420 people; 28 per cent of the total), Poland (977 740; 24 per cent) and Czechia (349 140; nine per cent)," the statement issued by the Eurostat says.

Eurostat data revealed that the highest rate of temporary protection recipients per 1,000 people was recorded in the following EU member states:

  • Czechia (32.2%)
  • Poland (26.6%)
  • Estonia (25.8%)
  • Bulgaria (25.9%)
  • Lithuania (24.7%)

The EU average was 9.1 beneficiaries of temporary protection per 1,000 people. According to the authority, Ukrainians accounted for over 98% of all temporary protection beneficiaries in the EU as of June 30, this year.

Nearly half of all beneficiaries were women, or 46.6%. Children accounted for slightly more than a third of beneficiaries (34.4%), while adults men made up less than a fifth (19.0%) of the total.

Eurostat figures showed that, by March 31st 2023, there would be 3.9 millions Ukrainians in total who will have temporary protection status throughout the EU.
