Flights cancellations triggered Memorial day holiday disruptions
More than 1.000 flights were cancelled yesterday causing chaos among American travellers aiming to spend the weekend on holiday.
Air traffic was severely affected by the almost 4.800 cancelled flights during the entire weekend, according to data released by flight tracking website FlightAware.
Delta Air Lines (DAL) reported more than 400 cancellations, with the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta overwhelmed by crowds. Bad weather and "air traffic control actions" were reported to be the main causes for the sudden schedule changes. Moreover, the airline has recently announced that starting from July 1st until August 7, it will reduce flight capacity towards local destinations in the United States and across Latin America.
Chief Customer Experience Officer Allison Ausband commented:
"More than any time in our history, the various factors currently impacting our operation — weather and air traffic control, vendor staffing, increased COVID case rates contributing to higher-than-planned unscheduled absences in some work groups —are resulting in an operation that isn't consistently up to the standards Delta has set for the industry in recent years.”
Other carriers, such as United and JetBlue, were also affected by the halt of operations during the weekend.
Airlines have also reported major flight cancellations also for today, with airports in New York City and Washington heavily affected by the decision.
