Gigantic Cruise Ship Unable to Dock at Scottish Island Port, Anchors Offshore Instead

Cruise Lines & Cruise Ships

A colossal cruise ship, equivalent in length to seven jumbo jets, found itself compelled to drop anchor outside a Scottish port due to its sheer size, unable to maneuver within.

The vessel in question, the MSC Preziosa, boasting an impressive 139,000-tonnage, was endeavoring to dock near the charming town of Stornoway within the picturesque Outer Hebrides.

Stornoway, a principal locale in the Western Isles, serving as the capital of both Lewis and Harris in the Scottish landscape, accommodates only a slightly larger population than the Preziosa's passenger capacity, with approximately 6,000 residents compared to the ship's 4,345 occupants.

This liner, operated under the MSC Cruises banner, boasts an impressive fleet of 1,745 cabins and commands a crew of approximately 1,388 members to maintain operations when operating at full capacity.

Regrettably, the Preziosa's dimensions exceeded the confines of Stornoway's dock, leaving it with no alternative but to remain anchored in the outer vicinity, situated to the south of the Arnish lighthouse throughout the duration of its cruise.

This occurrence echoes a recent incident involving a 60,000-ton ship that sought to dock in a diminutive Cornish town, sparking local discontent. The Spirit of Adventure made its presence felt in Fowey on 3 September, temporarily increasing the town's population of 2,2240 by nearly half, a remarkable feat considering its maximum passenger capacity stands at 987 individuals.

The 774ft vessel, recognized as the largest cruise liner to ever grace the quaint town, as per Fowey Harbour, elicited frustration from some residents, who took to various social media platforms, including Twitter, to voice their grievances.

One social media commentator expressed concerns by stating:

“The same thing will happen to Fowey Harbour that happened to Venice with these cruise ships.

“They destroy the area and overrun it with tourists. Venice finally banned them. Hopefully, Fowey will do the same.”

Another resident registered their disapproval, noting:

“Really out of place. I know it’s good for Fowey’s tourism but just looks awful in such a pretty harbour.”
