Hurricane Irma – the category 5 hurricane continues its way across the Caribbean
The extremely dangerous hurricane has already hit Barbuda, the Leeward Islands and currently moves closer to the Caribbean.
Warnings have already been issued for the following islands: Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Martin, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten and St. Barts.
Learn how safe is to travel in the areas affected by the Hurricane Irma from the latest updates, after the phenomenon was upgraded to a level 5, “the strongest hurricane in the Atlantic (Ocean) outside the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico in NHC records," as stated by the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC).
In the light of the recent situation, tourists from UK have already been warned to evacuate Florida, as The Foreign and Commonwealth Office have also issued an alert for other Caribbean islands, such as Antigua and St. Lucia which are currently threatened by the tornado.
As the weather is expected to be hazardous on both sea and land, flights and cruises will as well be affected by the hurricane.
“We have provided a special flight to Antigua to get our customers home before Hurricane Irma is expected to arrive on the island. The Antigua Airport authorities say that operations will be significantly impacted today, so we have offered all affected customers a range of re-booking options. We are in regular contact with our airport partners throughout the region, and are keeping our flights to other Caribbean islands under review,” a British Airways statement quotes. Moreover, Virgin and Caribbean Airlines will also divert their regular routes.
Cruise-liners, like Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruises are currently changing their itinerary to avoid the disastrous Irma.
"Given the storm's location and for the comfort and safety of our guests and crew, Royal Caribbean felt it necessary to alter the currently scheduled Eastern Caribbean itinerary for Allure of the Seas September 3 to a Western Caribbean itinerary,” the RC representatives declared.
Summing up, as from Wednesday 6 September 2017, all tourists in the area have been advised to monitor the U.S. National Hurricane Centre’s updates and strictly follow the instructions of local officials, including urgent evacuation orders from the authorities.
More details on the situation will follow.
