Jamaica’s tourism industry revives

News

With 1.54 million overnight travellers during 2021, the Jamaican tourism was considerably boosted by visitors from the United States.

1.278.679 tourists from the U.S. have visited Jamaica during 2021. Nevertheless, the figures represent a considerable decline from the usual number of travellers choosing the country for at least one night stay.

According to data from the Caribbean Tourism Organization, in 2019, during the pre-pandemic period, Jamaica welcomed a record number of 2.7 million visitors. However, 2021 was a great year for the country’s tourism industry.

“The fact that we exceeded visitor arrivals and spend projections for 2021 is a clear testament to the strength and resilience of Jamaica’s tourism product as well as the excellent relationships we enjoy with our travel industry partners.

“As we are gradually relaxing travel restrictions, we fully expect a stronger recovery as consumers from our key source markets are resuming international travel in steadily growing numbers”, commented the country’s minister of tourism, Edmund Bartlett.

As part of its strong anti-Covid-19 decisions, Jamaica implemented a “resilient corridors” program limiting tourist access to the most popular areas, while bosting the “Jamaica Cares” plan regarding public health and safety measures. The regulations allowed the country to quickly rebound its travel industry following two difficult years of tourism related shutdowns and restrictions.

As officials stated, Jamaica’s tourism and infrastructure developments are set to “continue to move forward”, while estimating that the island expects up to 2.5 million visitor arrivals during 2022 and almost $3billion in revenue.

“Current bookings indicate a very strong month for March 2022, with projections for it to be on par with March 2019,” the country’s Ministry of Tourism representatives commented, as Jamaica welcomed 27.000 visitors in only 3 days of the last month, the highest number of tourists registered after its borders opening in June 2020.
