London Luton Airport Temporarily Halts All Flights Due To Massive Fire

Airlines & Airports

There are no confirmed deaths, however 5 persons were treated for smoke inhalation and sent to the hospital.

Due to a massive fire that was started by a burning automobile, all flights into and out of London Luton Airport have been cancelled until 1400 GMT on Wednesday. The blaze caused one of its multi-story parking garages to partially collapse. Previous plans called for the suspension to last until 1100 GMT.

Thankfully, no one was reported missing or hurt after the incident was discovered late Tuesday night.

Images from the incident show massive flames consuming the building near the airport's main terminal.

"Our priority remains supporting the emergency services and the safety of our passengers and staff. Therefore, we have now taken the decision to suspend all flights until 3pm on Wednesday," the airport representatives stated.

The local fire service estimated that as many as 1,200 vehicles were parked there at the time of the incident.

The fire service called it a big incident, and later said that half of the building's frame was entirely immersed in flames and it had suffered a substantial structural breakdown. The source of the fire will be determined after an extensive probe, they added.

According to the ambulance service, four firemen and one airport employee were sent to a medical facility.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, Luton served 13.3 million passengers in 2022, making it the sixth busiest airport in Britain behind Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and Manchester.

As a result of the fire, airlines are now experiencing some interruption to their flying itineraries.

Affected customers of EasyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air will be notified as quickly as possible about the resuming of their flights, the airlines stated.
