Maximum security regime was activated around the Colosseum
A strong regime of maximum security with additional checks of all visitors has been active around the Colosseum area in Rome as part of the police precaution measures against the terrorism, Italian police said Wednesday, quoted by DPA.
“Colosseum area was placed under a maximum security code” police representatives said in a statement that shows that the access to this historical symbol of the Italian capital will be done only after all tourists pass through screening gates.
One of the main reasons for the introduction of these additional measures was that during the summer that area becomes an entirely pedestrian space, full of tourist added the police representatives, stressing also that another important area is the subject of this code; Via Del Corso, a central shopping thoroughfare, is the second place in Rome where additional verification are being made.
The police added that the current maximum security regime near the Basilica of St. Peter was extended to the space around the Vatican museums and the controls could be stepped up by naval terminals near Rome. Along with the nearby Roman Forum, the Colosseum is the most popular tourist attraction in Italy, attracting more than 6.5 million visitors last year, according to the Ministry of Culture.
In November 2015 after the Paris attacks, US authorities have warned about the risk of terrorist attacks on targets such as the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome or the Milanese symbols: the Dome and La Scala.
