Munich Airport Satellite Turns 10 With 93M Passengers Served

Airlines & Airports

Munich Airport's Terminal 2 Satellite has turned ten, and the numbers speak for themselves. Since opening on April 26, 2016, the facility has welcomed approximately 93 million passengers and handled around 672,000 flight movements — accounting for roughly 30 percent of takeoffs and landings within the Terminal 2 system, and 36 percent of its passengers. More than half of those — about 56 percent — are transfer passengers connecting onward to other destinations.

he Satellite was built as a joint venture between Munich Airport and Deutsche Lufthansa AG, with the two partners investing approximately 900 million euros in the project. Construction started in 2011, and the building has been continuously upgraded since opening, with additions including EasyPASS checkpoints, entry and exit registration systems, and expanded service areas.

The terminal is used exclusively by Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance carriers, with a particular focus on long-haul routes to India, Asia, and North America. Getting there from Terminal 2 is seamless — passengers reach the Satellite in about a minute via the airport's automated metro system after clearing security.
As Germany's first midfield terminal, the building also set a sustainability benchmark from the start, producing around 30 percent fewer emissions than the main Terminal 2 building.
Inside, the Satellite is far from a typical transit space. Spread across more than 7,000 square meters, it houses 15 retail outlets, seven restaurants and cafés, three duty-free areas, and five lounges covering over 4,000 square meters. The centrepiece is an open marketplace around the apron tower, designed to evoke the spirit of Munich's famous Viktualienmarkt. Panoramic windows offer views of the Alps, and a dedicated bar looks out directly onto the apron.

Looking ahead, Lufthansa and Munich Airport are already planning a further expansion of the building, with an opening targeted for 2035 — a move intended to strengthen Munich's position as a major international hub and support the growth of Lufthansa's long-haul network.
