Planning On Attending King Charles' Coronation In London?

News

Here is some information that you may find useful for your upcoming travel experience.

Admirers of the British royal family are preparing to flood the United Kingdom next week to attend the investiture of King Charles III. However, on May 6, Westminster Abbey will host a ceremony that is a formal state event and to which only invited visitors will have access (about 2,000 people). At the same time, visitors may still experience some of the festivities by taking a guided visit of a palace or castle connected to the monarchy.

However, according to the findings of a new poll conducted by UK Inbound, sixteen percent of local enterprises reported that they have seen a spike in bookings or searches associated with the investment, as well as the Eurovision Song Contest, which is scheduled to be held in Liverpool from May 9 to May 13.

For instance, the "King Charles III Coronation Tour," offered by Tours International of the United Kingdom, has already reached capacity. The tour boasts a stop at Westminster Abbey, where Charles III was crowned, as well as visits to other monarchic households, and a view of the procession celebrating the investment down The Mall in the heart of London. There's even a tea-drinking "etiquette" class thrown in for free.

Kayak data reveals that inquiries for flights from the United States to London over coronation weekend accounted for 40% more than they did during the same weekend in 2022. The reservations made via the travel app Hopper for a trip to London on May 6 were 14% more than the same weekend last year. The price of a one-way trip to London over the two days of the crowning is presently an average of $786, which similarly represents more than a 7% increase since the same period last year.

According to Going CEO Scott Keyes' interview with CBS MoneyWatch, 'without a doubt' there is a rise in demand for flights to the UK for King Charles' crowning.

"Air traffic to London Heathrow in the first quarter of 2023 had already recovered to 95% of 2019 levels, and I'd expect that figure to climb further amid the royal backdrop", he further explained.

Hotels in London are charging an average of $313 per night, up from $222 in the same period last year, as Hopper reports that public excitement in the coronation is also pushing up the cost of accommodation.

Expedia reports that reservations at London hotels for the weekend of May 5-7 are up 64 percent from the same period last year. The demand is mostly driven by tourists from the United States, followed by residents of the United Kingdom, Canadians, Germans, French, and Australians.

To have a good view of the procession, stay at the Conrad London St. James, which is conveniently positioned near Westminster Abbey. The cheapest nightly rate for a couple is $326.

The Mayfair Townhouse, located near Buckingham Palace, is cashing in on the coronation by offering monarch-themed surprises, welcome drinks, and souvenirs for an additional cost to its visitors. The cheapest available room for two persons is $374 per night.

On May 6, millions of people across the globe will tune in to see King Charles III's coronation ceremony, but only a select few will be invited to London to experience it first-hand.

Unlike in most past coronations, when only the British royals were present, this one is said to have welcomed members of other European and international royal families as well.

Nevertheless, as a result of the decreased number of attendees, only a select few British politicians have been asked to attend the event. Despite this, it is anticipated that some British officials will be there. Former prime ministers are said to have been assured seats, and current U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is anticipated to attend, together with part of his ministry colleagues.

Leaders from Europe and the United States, including President Biden, have also been invited to participate, as they represent some of Britain's most important partners and members of the British Commonwealth. However, the US President will not be attending because of his recent trip to the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, First Lady Jill Biden will be in attendance.

To break with custom, King Charles also planned on welcoming members of the public who had made notable contributions to their communities via volunteer-ism or charity giving.

There will be more than 1,250 youth and volunteers present during the coronation and related festivities. The attendance of 450 "COVID heroes," who assisted the United Kingdom during the coronavirus crisis, has been announced by Buckingham Palace.

The exclusive ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey.
