Frankfurt Airport Enhances Security Checkpoints with CT Scanners and New Lane Concept
In time for the busy summer travel season, Frankfurt Airport has marked a significant milestone by opening nine additional security checkpoints equipped with cutting-edge CT technology and an innovative lane concept in Departures B-West of Terminal 1. This enhancement aims to expedite the security process, allowing passengers to reach their departure gates more quickly and conveniently.
State-of-the-Art Security Enhancements
Dr. Pierre Dominique Prümm, Fraport AG's Executive Director of Aviation and Infrastructure, expressed his satisfaction with the project’s completion: “I am happy to announce that we now have additional state-of-the-art security checkpoints in operation for the summer season. My special thanks go to the project team, the suppliers from the industry, and our partner, the Federal Police, for implementing this complex project in record time. The use of the new technology is proving effective. On the busy travel days during the recent Easter and Whitsun school vacations, there were no significant waiting times for passengers at the security checkpoints. For the upcoming summer peak season, we are now offering our guests a smoother and faster experience at these busy checkpoints while maintaining high security standards.”
Improved Passenger Experience
Reduced Wait Times
The new checkpoints are equipped with CT scanners from Leidos, which significantly streamline the security process. Passengers can now keep electronic devices and liquids in their hand luggage, eliminating the need to present them separately. The modular design of the security lanes, provided by Italian manufacturer Gilardoni, allows several passengers to place their carry-on luggage on the belt simultaneously, increasing throughput by approximately 30%. These lanes also feature a fully automated tray return system, further enhancing efficiency.
Every day, approximately 35,000 passengers on 200 flights depart from Concourse B of Terminal 1. The implementation of the new CT technology ensures faster and more convenient checks, reducing overall wait times.
Future Plans for Airport Security
Fraport aims to install these advanced security checkpoints across all terminals at Frankfurt Airport, including the upcoming Terminal 3. The new technology has already been integrated into the design plans for Terminal 3, ensuring a consistent and improved passenger experience throughout the airport.
Understanding CT Technology
How It Works
The CT technology used in the new scanners is similar to that used in medical imaging. It enables reliable, fast, and distinct detection of various materials and objects. For passengers, this means a more straightforward process at security checkpoints, as liquids, smartphones, and other electronic devices can remain in carry-on baggage. The scanners provide a three-dimensional view of the security images, simplifying the workflow for staff and resulting in fewer follow-up checks and shorter wait times.
