Galway receives €17m for active and sustainable travel projects in 2024, enhancing cycling and walking infrastructure as part of a €290m national fund.

Galway is set to benefit from a significant injection of €17 million dedicated to fostering active and sustainable travel within the region for the year 2024. This funding is a portion of a larger €290 million national initiative aimed at enhancing walking and cycling infrastructure across Ireland, as announced by the Government.

The allocation for Galway is divided between the city and county councils, with Galway City Council receiving €8.7 million earmarked for 34 active travel projects. Additionally, €5.5 million will be dedicated to various sustainable travel initiatives within the city. Among these projects, a standout allocation includes €2 million for an ambitious cycling scheme in the Ballybane and Castlepark areas, alongside €600,000 set aside for the development of the anticipated Wolftone Pedestrian Bridge.

On the county level, Galway County Council has been granted €2.5 million to support a suite of 20 active travel projects throughout 2024. Highlighted within this funding is a €300,000 award for the Safe Routes to School scheme, benefiting Calasanctius College, Gaelscoil de hÍde, and Scoil Iósaif Naofa in Oranmore. Furthermore, €160,000 is allocated for active travel enhancements in Beechlawn and Shannonbridge.

This funding reflects a commitment to promoting healthier, more sustainable modes of transportation, aiming to improve the quality of life for residents and contribute to environmental preservation in Galway.
