Munich Airport Group Achieves Second 5-Star Rating with Newark Terminal A

Airlines & Airports

Newark Liberty International Airport's Terminal A, managed by Munich Airport Group, receives Skytrax 5-Star Airport Terminal Rating, joining an elite group of airport facilities recognized for exceptional customer service and facilities.

Munich Airport International GmbH (MAI) and its subsidiary, Munich Airport NJ LLC (MANJ), have announced a significant achievement: Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) has been awarded a 5-Star Airport Terminal Rating by Skytrax, the global air travel rating organization. This prestigious rating is a testament to the terminal's superior customer experience, making it the second facility within the Munich Airport Group to earn this distinction, following Munich Airport itself—the first European Airport to receive and recently recertify a Skytrax 5-Star Rating for the fourth consecutive time.

The 5-Star rating is awarded to airport terminals exhibiting exceptional standards in facilities and staff services across all front-line areas. Achieving this rating indicates that the services and products offered are either meeting or setting global best practices.

Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport, expressed pride in this achievement, noting the effective collaboration with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) and highlighting the Munich Airport Group's unique position as the first airport operator to manage two 5-Star terminals on two continents.

Terminal A, which opened in January 2023 with an investment of $2.7 billion USD, is designed to provide a world-class experience to 15 million annual customers. It features spacious interiors, inspiring local art, and a selection of restaurants and small businesses that reflect the local culture, providing a distinctive ambiance both landside and airside.

Dr. Lutz Weisser, Managing Director of MAI, and Michael Kunz, CEO of MANJ, both praised the collaborative effort leading to the terminal's success and its Skytrax 5-Star Rating, which places Terminal A among the elite in North American airport facilities.

The 3-day Skytrax audit highlighted Terminal A's exceptional customer experience features, including user-friendly wayfinding, dynamic TSA signage, diverse facilities, ample seating with charging options, innovative security screening, and a rich selection of local food and retail outlets. The terminal's "Digital Journey of Surprises" and the "Forest of Firsts" LED display are particularly noted for enhancing the passenger experience by celebrating New Jersey's spirit and innovation.

In addition to the 5-Star rating, Terminal A has received numerous accolades, including the UNESCO Prix Versailles Award, LEED Gold Certification, and the American Society of Civil Engineers 2023 Project of the Year, affirming its excellence in design, sustainability, and engineering.
