SWISS Begins Pilot Training for Airbus A350 with New Full-Flight Simulator
SWISS is set to commence the training of its cockpit crew members for the new Airbus A350 at the beginning of February 2025. This marks an important step toward the A350’s integration into the airline's fleet, with the first of ten A350-900 aircraft scheduled for delivery this summer. The training will utilize the newly installed A350 full-flight simulator at Lufthansa Aviation Training Switzerland (LAT CH) in Opfikon, near Zurich Airport.
The A350 represents a major milestone in SWISS’s ongoing fleet renewal. The new twinjets are set to replace the airline's current A340-300 fleet, enhancing both efficiency and passenger comfort. The A350’s advanced features will take SWISS's long-haul operations to new heights, and pilot training is crucial for ensuring smooth integration into their scheduled services.
Over 50 Pilots to Be Trained in 2025
In total, more than 50 pilots are expected to undergo training in 2025 to operate the A350. The new A350 full-flight simulator will be in use around the clock from February onwards to ensure that sufficient crews are ready by the time the aircraft enters service. Training will continue with additional pilots expected to be trained annually, reaching about 90 pilots per year starting in 2026.
Preparing Cabin Crew for the A350
In addition to pilot training, SWISS’s cabin crew will begin their training for the new A350 from March 2025. Mock-ups and specialized equipment have already been installed at the LAT CH training facility in Opfikon, and 1,800 cabin crew members are scheduled to undergo training by the end of this year.
The Importance of LAT CH
Oliver Buchhofer, SWISS's Chief Operating Officer, shared:
“The addition of the Airbus A350 is a significant step for SWISS. It highlights our commitment to a modern fleet, and we’re excited to offer a seamless transition for both our cockpit and cabin crew. The training at LAT CH ensures that all personnel are ready for the A350, simplifying our planning and enhancing the importance of this key local training facility.”
With this comprehensive training program, SWISS is preparing its teams for a smooth and successful entry into service for the A350 later this year.
