Rwanda Will Be the Next WTTC Global Summit Host
In the closing session of WTTC Riyadh saw Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, as the perfect host for 2023.
The closing session of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), Global Summit in Riyadh saw Rwanda's capital, Kigali, announced as the venue for 2023. This is the first African visit of the event.
WTTC today closed its largest-ever Global Summit with over 3,000 attendees in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).
Global Summit was attended by former UK Prime Minister Theresa May and Ban Ki-Moon, who were both former Secretary-General of the United Nations. Edward Norton, an actor, filmmaker, and Golden Globe winner was also a speaker at the summit.
WTTC's record-breaking Global Summit was the most important Travel & Tourism event on the calendar. It attracted more than 85 countries and over 50 ministers.
The event attracted more than 250 media representatives from all over the globe, and thousands of people worldwide watched it remotely.
WTTC and the Ministry of Tourism of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia jointly launched the Environmental & Social Research program (ESR) during the event.
This new data provides unprecedented details about the climate footprint of the global Travel & Tourism industry. It covers 185 countries in all regions and is a world-first. The research will be updated every year with the most current figures.
WTTC also launched the Cities Economic Impact Report (EIR)
The report, sponsored by Visa, shows that cities are still the most important source of international tourism. It will also drive economic recovery in the region.
Julia Simpson, WTTC President and CEO, addressed delegates during her closing speech. She stated: "Saudi Arabia will be the next major destination for visitors as it invests $800 billion in showcasing the Kingdom to the world.
"From the Red Sea to snow-capped mountains, Saudi is full of surprises.
"We are incredibly excited that Rwanda will host our next Global Summit in 2023. An amazing country famous for its conservation work, Rwanda is building its reputation as a must-see destination."
The theme of "Travel for a Better Future", the Riyadh event focused on the importance of the sector to not only the global economy but also to the planet and communities all around the globe.
