Sustainable Hospitality Alliance launches new resource hub to help refugees

News

The hospitality network has opened a guidance and resource hub dedicated to hotels who are willing to support displaced people.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the hospitality industry did its best to help guests, local residents and charitable organisations overcome the community challenges related to restrictions, health status as well as other needs. And, with the crisis generated by the war in Ukraine, similar support was needed.

In order to help refugees who fled the ravaged country, several hospitality operators across Europe have joined in the common effort to accommodate refugees who transited their countries or even remained permanently. In addition, more industry jobs were created with the occasion.

To further boost logistics and help during similar crisis, the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance has launched a set of guidance for hotels promoting the recruitment of refugees or other displaced people categories, this way actively supporting them in their quest. The resource aims to facilitate access to jobs for people affected by the conflict, as well as provide training resources for refugees in search of a new career. The entire process launched by The Alliance is based on ethical recruitment, in order to avoid any form of abuse, exploitation or human trafficking.

Glenn Mandziuk, CEO of the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, commented:

“Through conversations with our members, we recognised that every hotel was inspired to action by the crisis in Ukraine, and felt an urgent need to show their support and solidarity to colleagues and others impacted by the conflict.

“By sharing their real-life experiences and resources, it enables us to provide guidance and trainings to the wider industry that’s applicable not just to this present crisis, but the ongoing situations that refugees and internally displaced people continue to experience across the globe.

“We plan for this resource to continue to evolve and develop as we support the industry to deliver net positive hospitality.”

Key members of the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance initiative are: Accor, Four Seasons, Hilton, IHG Hotels and Resorts, Marriott International and Radisson Hotel Group.

The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance is committed to represent the industry’s targets in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, while promoting human rights, youth employment, equity, diversity, inclusion, environment protection and responsible operations. The Alliance represents 30% of the global hotel industry and features 16 major hotel companies, accounting for more than 5.5 million rooms on a global level.
