Swiss Increases Availability Of "Green Fares" Throughout Europe

News

After a series of successful tests in Scandinavia, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) is extending its "green fares" initiative across Europe in collaboration with the Lufthansa group.

When a client purchases one of SWISS's Green Fares, the cost of their flight already accounts for the cost of offsetting the carbon dioxide emissions caused by their journey. The new Green Fare option is a welcome addition to SWISS's already extensive selection of options on the subject of environmental responsibility.

In August 2022, SWISS began conducting tests of the new fares in the markets that it serves in the Scandinavian region. Together with the other airlines that are a part of the Lufthansa Group, Swiss International Air Lines is now making its "Green Fares" available in all of its European markets immediately.

When a SWISS passenger purchases a Green Fare, the airline immediately begins compensating for the carbon dioxide emissions caused by their trip. Eighty percent of the carbon dioxide emissions are offset by contributions to high-quality climate protection programs, while the remaining twenty percent are offset by the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The current generation of environmentally friendly aircraft fuels produces emissions of carbon dioxide that are 80 percent lower than those generated by conventional aviation kerosene. In addition, SAF presents the possibility of almost carbon-neutral aviation in the not-too-distant future.

The carrier’s Chief Commercial Officer Tamur Goudarzi Pour declared:

“With our Green Fares, which we have already successfully trialled in Scandinavia, we are offering our customers a further attractive and simple option for making their air travel more sustainable and, by purchasing SAF, helping to transform the aviation sector.

“Working together in this way, we can send strong signals to the market to continue to pursue SAF’s development and production. We will only be able to scale up SAF production to the extent required through a joint drive of this kind from customers, airlines and technology providers alike, and with the appropriate political support.”

When making an online reservation on the airline’s official webpage, the Green Fare is one of the fare alternatives that may be selected with the other available fare categories. Similarly, when booking an Edelweiss flight on the SWISS website, passengers will also be presented with the opportunity to purchase the new Green Fare.

The new Green Fares come with a number of added benefits, including free seat reservations when rebooking and bonus Miles & More status options. The new deal is bookable in both the Business Class and Economy Class cabins of the airline.
